Well, let's be honest. I did say I'd get around to a major Sonic piece for his 20th Anniversary in addition to everything else I was doing. And I wasn't kidding. Everything else I've done was because. This... Was personal.
I'd spent quite a lot of time on this, basically spending quite a lot of hours working on the tech (because I didn't think I was any good at it and wanted to be), also working with Green Hill Zone's colour palette (Read as: Every colour under the sun), it was proving quite tricky to bring all of those colours together in a cohesive way that worked as a digital painting as opposed to a cel-shaded piece, or otherwise. I never actually counted, but including conception and research it must have taken me nigh on 40-50~ hours. Again, I'm not too sure on this number; as usual, the original sketch was done completely by hand.
I wanted this picture to represent my art history with Sonic through the years as well as being a fan for the last 20 years. Each of my colouring styles are somewhat reflected in this, and I put away countless hours preparing this because I didn't want it to be "Oh God just another two Sonics in Green Hill Zone" picture. I owe a lot to a fictional blue hedgehog. The wonderful friends that I've met (and kept) over the years, the opportunities that I've come across, and my job. He was my friend when I didn't have any, and he's been my inspiration for all these years. I love Sonic. Past, present and future. And it's safe to say that there will always be a little piece of the blue hedgehog within me for the rest of my life.
Happy 20th Anniversary, Sonic the Hedgehog. (And Eggman~!) (...And because I feel obligated to now: Happy 10th Birthday Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat ...Uh, Maria. Professor Gerald. Mr. President. Biolizard/Finalhazard. G.U.N. Robots-- See?! This is why we keep it simple, guys!)
Wow, this is really amazing! The shading and lighting effects are exceptional, and the composition as a whole is appealing; all the detail and action is cool. Love the coloring style! Again, awesome work.
Great action packed scenery, this could be official art! I stared this long because it has so much complexity and details. Looking at the green hills patterns brings so many memories to me. I adore your skills mate!
Man, after playing the game and coming back to this, the pic starts to mean more, and def more than 'just another pic of two sonics in green hill~~~'! This is a beautiful homage! It's wonderfully busy but not overwhelming, much like the representations in-game. The cute totems are the cutest, Modern Sonic's quick step/jump is a smart addition, the baddies are painted in a really slick way, and every section is presented really clean. What's not to love?
It's neat to see a devoted fan actually work on a game! I'm really curious, what was it like? Working for this game, seeing it grow, working with Sega? Are there any details you could share on what a normal workday's like? Testing sounds like an interesting job, was it an easy application process? I've thought about looking into it, but I feel goofy; sorry to swamp you with questions!
